Lotus will introduce an automatic gearbox with paddle shift for its Evora model in Malaysia next May.
Lotus Cars Malaysia head Oh Kah Beng said the decision was made for practical reasons.
“Driving a sports car is awesome, but sitting through massive traffic jams with a manual transmission is not,” he said at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2010.
The Lotus Evora is a 3.5 litre car. The manual model is priced at between RM450,000 and RM520,000 and the automatic at between RM490,000 and RM550,000.
He said the Evora was equipped with creature comforts suitable for city driving while successfully maintaining a sports car ride and handling.
“I believe sports car drivers would want to get maximum mileage for their money.
“They would want to invest in cars they can enjoy all the time, not just during weekends for rides out of the city,” he said.
Oh said he believed Lotus was on track to take its place among top sports car brands like Ferrari and Maserati.
The Lotus display area in the Proton exhibition arena is a top draw with visitors who were mesmerised by the iconic Lotus Esprit.
Lotus Cars Limited South/East Asia Territory Manager Christian Pauketat praised Proton.
“Proton has placed a lot of trust in us since 1997,” he said,
He noted that Proton now benefited from Lotus technology.
KLIMS 2010 will run until Sunday at the Putra World Trade Centre, and features exciting new concept vehicles, green technology, novelty attractions, as well as booths selling various vehicle accessories.-thestar.com.my
