Behind the Scenes: Building Audi’s Electric Spyder

When Audi released the E-Tron Spyder concept car at this year’s Paris Auto Show, the car’s sleek lines and daring proportions took the show-goers’ breath away. Earlier today, Audi released a series of behind-the-scenes photos chronicling the design team’s efforts to get the sport roadster’s shape “just right”.
It’s a bit art, a bit science, and a bit of insight into what the 17-person design team at Audi’s Ingolstadt studio goes through to build an auto show dream car – in fact, these photos seem to be just the tip of the iceberg, since one article reports that “teams were created, contestants were narrowed down, and the final two designs were projected as 3D computer models at an office at (Audi’s headquarters).”
Once the winning design was chosen, the design was tweaked to fit over existing “parts-bin” components and a full clay model of the final E-Tron Spyder was rendered (in the gallery).  Molds were made from the final clay, along with literally thousands of hand-crafted foam-core and carbon-fiber parts.
The finished, assembled showpiece came together – from final approval to transport – in less than six weeks … which was ideal, because it was all the time they had!
In the end, the car was a stunner, and Audi’s concept construction coordinator Uwe Haller even remarked (about the car’s wheels) that “the design for the wheels was so well received … we did whatever was necessary to turn the proposal into reality.” reflecting the design team’s determination to make sure the final product exceeded everyone’s expectations.-gas2.org

Fernandes under pressure to drop Lotus name?

Heikki Kovalainen, Turkish GP 2010Lotus Racing boss Tony Fernandes appears to be under pressure to drop the Lotus name if he wants to secure his supply of Renault engines.Lotus Racing terminated its three-year engine supply deal with Cosworth three weeks ago and has already announced a drive train collaboration with Red Bull for 2011. The anticipated confirmation of the Renault engine deal, however, has not been forthcoming.

It appears that industry politics may have lodged a spoke in Fernandes' wheel. It seems that Renault does not wish to supply F1 engines to a company in dispute with a fellow manufacturer - in this case Proton. Fernandes recently had a licence to run as Lotus in F1 from Group Lotus-owning Proton, terminated, prompting his purchase of the rights to Team Lotus from David Hunt, as announced in Singapore. But, judging from the recent PR tennis, is seems that Group Lotus has different racing plans for the Lotus name.
After ending a partnership with VW in 2007, Proton held talks with both Renault and GM in early 2009 about possible future relationships. A Proton spokesman said at the time: "We are discussing how we can explore working together. An alliance is vital. We need to have scale."
Alliances make sense for Proton given that developing a new model can exhaust almost 50% of its cash reserves and it has lost significant ground to both Toyota and Honda in its home market.
To cut reliance on the Malaysian market, Proton is also focusing on the Middle East/China/India/South east Asia and in the next decade is targeting overseas sales accounting for 70% of the total as against 20% now. A political association with Renault to further those aims would not be out of the question, with a deal already in existence for the supply of the 1.2-litre engine from the Twingo/Clio for use in Proton's Savvy.
There are suggestions too, that Renault could even play hardball if Fernandes refuses to drop the name and embarks on a protracted legal wrangle over the rights to Lotus in F1. Should he lose and thereby need a name change, to Air Asia F1 let's say, he would require agreement from his fellow competitors, one of which is obviously Renault...-grandprix.com

SpyShots : Nissan Sunny (V-Platform sedan) interiors

Thanks to Indianautosblog.com, we have the first spy images showing the interiors of Nissan V-Platform sedan that will be called Sunny in the overseas market. The spy pictures were sent by a car enthusiast named Vu Hung from Thailand.
It is expected that Japanese manufacturer Nissan will be launching the V-Platform sedan with a different name. Experts believe that Sunny is the sedan version of Nissan’s recently launched hatchback Micra but with a powerful engine. Sunny will be available with both diesel (1.5L) and petrol (1.6L) powered engine options.
From the spy shots posted here we can make out that Sunny’s interiors will be a lot similar to Micra’s. Front seats, door handles, start-stop touch button, aircon controls and mirrors have all been lifted from Nissan Micra.-rushlane.com

Subaru Forester S-Edition: 2010 Sydney Auto Show

Subaru Forester S-Edition Concept Picture

Subaru's Forester S-Edition concept, unveiled here at the 2010 Sydney Auto Show, offers "some strong clues pointing to a new variant next year" — for the Australia market. A Subaru of America spokesman told Inside Line there are "no plans" to offer a similar model in the U.S., at least not just yet.
The Forester S-Edition is more potent than the Forester XT on which it's based. The concept's turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-4 engine — based on the company's third-generation boxer engine family — makes 259 horsepower and 256 pound-feet of torque, compared with 224 hp and 226 lb-ft for the Forester XT.
The Forester S-Edition also features a five-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters, revised sport suspension, all-wheel drive with variable torque distribution, 17-inch STI alloy wheels, drilled alloy pedals, Alcantara seat trim and S-Edition logos and badging.-insideline.com

New Citroen C1, Peugeot 108 And Toyota Aygo To Come In 2011

The new generation of the three city models build jointly by PSA Peugeot-Citroen and Toyota will be launched in 2011, at Frankfurt Auto Show.
Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota will launch in 2011 the new generation of the city triad we first saw at Geneva Motor Show in 2004. We are talking about the C1, 108 and Aygo “triplets”, models which will be presented with their new look within the Frankfurt Auto Show that will be held in 2011′s fall.
Unlike the models already sold on the market, the new generations will be a bit different as design and customers approach. So, even though there are no details about the final design lines of the three “brothers”, the French publications claim that the roof’s line will no longer be identical, as C1, 108 and Aygo will exclusively share the platform and the engines.
Peugeot 107, Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1
The new generations of Citroen C1, Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo will be assembled in the same Czech plant that builds them nowadays, and the cars will be ready to first hit the roads in the beginning of 2012.
Let’s hope all three petite cars will enjoy the same success among the ladies and the fans of small city cars as they did so far.-mibz.com

2011 Kia Sorento EX-V6 Luxury

Language geeks will tell you that nothing can ever be both new and improved, only one or the other. But something can be both new and an improvement over what it replaces, which is the case with the 2011 Kia Sorento.

2011 Kia Sorento EX
2011 Kia Sorento EX

It wasn’t too hard to improve upon the first-generation Sorento, which was a comfortable but fairly unsophisticated SUV with thirsty engines, a truly-truckish body-on-frame construction, and solid rear axle suspension.
Everything about this second-generation version is all-new: 2.4-litre four-cylinder (175 hp/169 lb-ft of torque) and 3.5-litre V6 (276 hp/248 lb-ft) engines which replace the old truck’s two V6s; a newly available all-wheel drive system and a new front-wheel drive model; an all-independent suspension; and a new – and, you might even say, improved – look inside and out.
The Sorento can be had in a variety of trim packages, ranging from the $23,995 LX (the only one offered with a manual transmission) to the seven-seat EX-V6 Luxury model that goes for $39,395 with a sharp looking black and ivory leather interior. My tester was just like that, but with plain black leather surfaces and an MSRP of $39,195.
In the base model LX, you get the Sorento’s generous list of standard features, which includes heated front seats and Bluetooth connectivity in all trims, while the EX adds leather, power driver’s seat, automatic climate control and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with integrated back-up camera. Pony up for my top-line tester and you also get navigation, panoramic sunroof, rear spoiler, mood lighting, premium stereo, and third row seating with air conditioning controls.
The front seats are nicely shaped, but the prominent lumbar support might prove too much for some, and firm cushions can get a little hard-feeling on longer drives. Headroom up front seems tight for a tall vehicle, but rear seat room is more generous, with lots of legroom and toe room under the front seats. The panoramic sunroof makes coach class bright and airy; it’s too bad it can’t be had in combination with the four-cylinder engine.
Not surprisingly for a mid-size crossover, the Sorento’s third row is tight and really only suitable for children, like my six-year-old nephew, who found his spot back there quite comfortable. Third row access is provided only on the passenger side, where the second row seat can be folded and then flipped forward and (mostly) out of the way. The Dodge Journey and GM’s big Traverse/Acadia crossovers do this better, with seats that slide forward with one simple motion to allow third row riders in and out privileges.
Like other recent Kias, the interior is well designed, though some of the materials give away the brand’s budget-oriented bearing. Interior oddities include the push-button rear wiper and washer controls, found on the dash to the left of the wheel, instead of on the main wiper stalk. Also slightly odd are the visor-mounted vanity mirrors, whose lights must be turned on manually with a switch on the headliner, rather than turning on automatically when the mirror is opened. Then there’s Kia’s infuriating USB stereo interface, which has failed to work with any iPod I’ve plugged into it in any number of their test cars.
The cargo hold is large once you fold the third row seats out of sight, and the second row folds to create a nearly flat load floor. The headrests in the second and third rows fold out of the way automatically when the seats are folded flat.
On the road, the Sorento is a major improvement over its predecessor, with surprisingly good steering and braking feel and a firm but comfortable ride. The suspension is easily unsettled by sharp bumps, however, and the resulting noises make the car feel unsophisticated over rough roads.
The six-cylinder engine is more refined, with its smooth revving nature and good power delivery. Another of Kia’s hallmarks is its touchy throttles, and that makes an appearance here: care is needed to make smooth exits from traffic lights. Official fuel consumption estimates for the Sorento with V6 and all-wheel drive are 11.1/7.9 L/100 km (city/highway); my tester, which had nearly 3,000 km on the odometer, averaged an unimpressive 10.5 L/100 km on a highway road trip, and 13.5 in all-city driving.
A six-speed automatic transmission is the only one offered with the V6 engine. It works well, and though you might not guess it from my tester’s so-so fuel economy, is programmed for efficiency and upshifts early and often and can be slow to downshift when you need it to. There’s a manual shift mode, but its responses are lazy and make it best suited to manually holding a lower gear on steep downhill stretches.
The Sorento’s all-wheel drive system is of the slip-and-grip variety found in most of the competitors in this class. Front-wheel power is the default, with torque only being sent to the rear axle when wheelspin is detected; for tough terrain, the centre differential can be locked to split power 50/50 at low speeds. The system would be enough to get you down a mucky cottage trail, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is anything like a true off-roader. The larger Borrego is now the only Kia SUV with a true four-wheel drive system, including low-range gearing.
The Sorento runs in a competitive group of vehicles and its seven-seat option pits it against some of the larger vehicles in the class, like the Honda Pilot, Ford Edge and Toyota Highlander. In five-seat trim, though, it would be more fairly cross-shopped against the Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain, Nissan Murano and Subaru Outback. The Dodge Journey and Hyundai Santa Fe (a mechanical twin to the Sorento) are the only other smallish mid-sizers that offer seating for seven.
For all that this truck is a significant upgrade over what came before it, the changes only put it mid-pack in terms of mechanical sophistication and styling; what really sells it, as with most Kias, is its high feature-to-dollar ratio. The Sorento definitely is new; I just can’t help but think they could have spent more time on the improved part.-.autotrader.ca

2011 Honda CR V Gets Updated 2011 honda cr v 1
Honda CR-V has always been criticized for being more of a MPV than a real SUV, despite this we liked it! We like its innocent face, and the fact that each of its MPV-ish features have their uses in the real world. For 2011 the CR-V has been revised, slightly, and features an upgraded exterior and new equipments.
The new model can be had as the SE or Special Edition, fitted with a number of extra features including lightweight alloys, a 160-watt AM/FM/6-disc changer with six speakers, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and rear privacy glass.
Other standard kit you get with the car include items like 5-speed automatic transmission with active lockup torque converter, Grade Logic Control system, Real Time 4WD system, air conditioning with air-filtration system, keyless entry, tilt-and-telescopic steering column, cruise control, power windows with auto-up/down driver’s window, power door and tailgate locks, AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers, fuel economy meter and 17-inch steel wheels.
The power still comes from the a 2.4-liter four-cylinder VTEC engine developing 180 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque.-motorward.com

Mitsubishi i-MiEV Sport Concept Car Debuts at 2010 Sydney Motor Show

Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Concept
As the Australian shores braces itself for a galore of  new automobiles from celebrated manufacturers, here is Japanese automaker Mitsubishi trying to seize its share of audiences with the  i-MiEV Sport concept car. Unveiled at this year’s Australian International Motor Show, the i-MiEV Sport according to its maker, “embodies Mitsubishi Motor’s (MMC’s) environmental technology while maximizing the sporty possibilities of the zero-emissions electric vehicle.
The lithium-ion battery-powered, all-wheel drive coupe concept is based on the recently released i-MiEV electric vehicle.  The i-MiEV Sport makes use of in-wheel motors at the front and a third motor driving the rear wheels, all controlled by the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) vehicle dynamics system. Weighing around 970 kilograms, thanks to the light rigid aluminum space frame, the concept generates a powerful 680Nm of torque.
Apart from the S-AWC, the vehicle also features an E-4WD system, a new E-AYC (Electric Active Yaw Control) system, ABS and ASC.
Shining in the light green pearlescent paint, the i-MiEV Sport can cruise to 200 km (125 miles) on a single charge, increased by photovoltaic solar cells mounted in the roof and a power generating fan mounted in the front grille.  For more power, at play are Mitsubishi’s bright power-saving LED lighting system, regenerative braking functions, heat-absorbing window glass and company’s unique plant-based Green Plastic resin technology.
“The focus for our display here at the show is on innovation and technology, and the i-MiEV Sport shows that, at Mitsubishi, electric vehicles have taken the next step forward,” said Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited’s (MMAL’s) President and CEO, Masahiko Takahashi. “They have the performance possibilities to make them a whole lot of fun.”-nitrobahn.com

2012 Nissan GT-R Picture
Nissan has already unveiled the significantly refreshed 2012 GT-R for Japan, and this week the automaker announced it will unveil the U.S.-spec car at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Showin November.
The U.S.-spec 2012 Nissan GT-R will go on sale in February. Pricing hasn't been announced.
New for the Japanese home market are GT-R Club Track and Egoist editions, with prices in Japan ranging from the equivalent of $107,000 (based on current exchange rates) for the basic GT-R Pure edition to the equivalent of $193,900 for the range-topping GT-R Spec V. The Japan-spec GT-R goes on sale in the home market in mid-November as a 2011 model.
Nissan has revised the GT-R's front and rear bumpers and enhanced the car's aerodynamics, so that downforce is increased by 10 percent while coefficient of drag is trimmed from 0.27 to 0.26. Two new special-order colors, Meteo Flake Black Pearl and Aurora Flare Blue Pearl, are available in Japan.
Under the skin, the company has made numerous refinements to the suspension and body structure to improve handling, stability and responsiveness. Among the changes are increases in engine output to 523 horsepower and in torque to 451 pound-feet — sizable increases over the 2011 GT-R's 485 hp and 434 lb-ft. Fuel economy also has been improved, with the average on the Japanese test cycle rising to 20 mpg.
Springs, shocks and stabilizer bars have been recalibrated to improve cornering stability and provide more precise handling. Brakes also have been upgraded. The GT-R gets new Rays forged alloy wheels painted Hyper Blue Black Chrome. In Japan, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 600 DSST CTT tires featuring a new tread pattern will be mounted on these wheels, but expect a different tire for the U.S. market.
Nissan has upgraded the cockpit as well, with redesigned seats and a revised instrument panel.
The 2012 Nissan GT-R portfolio in Japan has been expanded with the bespoke Egoist edition, which Nissan says is created by a takumi, or "master with greatest skills." Available by special order and priced from $184,650, the GT-R Egoist offers customers a choice of 20 interior colors, plus quilted leather seats hand-stitched by Seton of Germany.
The premium Bose audio system in the GT-R Egoist is fitted with special carbon-composite woofers, and the audio quality is individually adjusted based on the owner's driving position. In the center of the steering wheel on the GT-R Egoist is an emblem created by the traditional Japanese craftsman Sakae Kubota in Wajima lacquer, which changes color with age.
The GT-R Egoist shares several bits with the Spec V, including a titanium exhaust system, dry carbon rear spoiler and Rays forged alloy wheels, finished in Blue Sword Chrome (the Spev V wheels are finished in Metallic Black).
For Japanese racers, Nissan has added a GT-R Club Track edition. This track-only model, which hasn't been priced, is prepped and distributed by Japan's GT-R Authorised Service Factory Association, which also is organizing local races and providing one-on-one competition training sessions with professional drivers.
Nissan said it is "considering" the introduction of the GT-R Club Track in Europe and the GT-R Egoist in Europe and the Middle East.-insideline.com
