TomTom iPhone GPS App Adds Navigate-To-Photo Functionality

TomTomiPhone.jpgGoogle Maps Navigation may have a leg-up on the other navigation services on the mobile platforms, but TomTom's not letting their guard down. The company was one of the first to showcase a full mobile navigation service for a mobile platform (iPhone OS, now iOS), and they have been constantly updating it ever since to make it more robust. There's plenty to love about it, and those who own an iPhone and a car dock could easily use the TomTom iPhone app in place of a dedicated navigation unit. And now, that choice is being made even simpler for users.

TomTom v1.5 has now become available in Apple's App Store, with the new version allowing users to turn their photo gallery into an address book. The primary new feature is "navigate-to-photo," where you simply take a geo-tagged picture with the iPhone and then use the TomTom app to navigate to that address. Take a picture of grandmother's house, and then on Thanksgiving, just tell your app to navigate there. Easy as pie!

The update is free of charge to existing owners and can be downloaded now.

2010 Chrysler 300S

chrysler 300s

Exterior Thoughts

The 300 was first shown at the New York Auto Show back in 2003 and it was one of the best looking vehicles on the road. It came out in the retro years when Chrysler had already created the PT Cruiser. Like milk sitting on a shelf for years, the 300 hasn’t aged as well as we had hoped. Some might argue otherwise, but after a week with it, we grew tired of the overall style.
All the surfaces on the vehicle are flat and our S V8 model came with large 20-inch darkened wheels that would have looked better had the color been different. Where as most cars flow from front to back, the 300 seems to just sit there like a square blob. Still, imagine it in black with those rims and that grille, and the tide completely turns.
The S V8 trim level is, in a way, the last hurrah before the 300 gets redone for the 2012 model year. Along with the wheels, Chrysler has added a new grille, which is one of the trademark features of the car. Not much has changed around back, expect of course for the badges. All in all, the SRT8 version looks far better.

Interior Thoughts

While the exterior may be aging, the interior has always been old. It’s bland, dull, and fronted with odd fittings like an oversized steering wheel, thick A-pillars, and a deep unpleasant dashboard. Had the car been priced at $25,000 these things would have been acceptable, but for the price of this machine we can’t issue Chrysler a pass on this one.
The S V8 version added sport seats, similar to the ones you’ll find in the Challenger, only worse. If you have wide shoulders, the bolsters will get unpleasant after awhile. Besides that, there isn’t a whole lot that separates this version from the others in the 300 range. All in all, there isn’t much to love about the interior of this vehicle. The materials are below average, the plastics are clunky, it has shoddy fittings of the trim, and irritating plastic chrome around the cup holders and the gear shifter.
Luckily, while it might look and feel bad, it’s fairly easy to use. Our S V8 model came with heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and auxiliary input and iPod integration. The 300S also came with Chrysler’s UConnect navigation/infotainment system. The system is light years behind what other companies are offering, but it’s easy to use and fairly quick during most requests.
One of the aspects that make the 300 loved by many people is the sheer size of the thing. It rides on the LX platform with a wheelbase of 120 inches. There is plenty of room to spread out in the front, but with those new sportier seats, rear seat room is a tad disappointing. Despite the car’s massive size, the high beltline and low roof destroy headroom. We had to move the seat up as far as we could in order to see out, but we found that our head kept hitting the ceiling. Frankly, this sort of thing is unacceptable in a vehicle of this size.

Driving Impressions

Had we been able to secure the 6.1-liter SRT8, these faults might have been forgiven, but we couldn’t. Our test S V8 came with 5.7-liter Hemi that cranks out 360 horsepower and 342 pound-feet of torque. Now, we don’t want to get into the business of bashing, but with all the displacement that this motor offers, we were expecting more power. BMW is able to get more horses out of less displacement, as are other companies. We love big motors, but there is nothing wrong with a little technology as well. The big motor will take the 300S to 60 miles per hour in around 5.8 seconds, which isn’t bad at all, but don’t make a habit out of it. During a week’s worth of driving, we managed 19 miles per gallon combined city and highway.
Turn on the traction control and it’s easy to get those back tires smoking, but this car is meant for that after all. The brakes are good, but nothing compared to what you would get on the SRT8. After a few runs of hard use, there was little fade.
When the road gets twisty, the 300S gets scary. This is a large machine and typically, large American machines are about as good at going around corners as the Cleveland Browns are at playing football. The big Chrysler has some body roll when pushed hard and you can easily tell that this is one heavy machine. The steering is light and uninvolved, and that massive wheel makes you feel like you’re commanding a ship. The tires do a good job of keeping the car on the road, but it’s certainly not graceful. The 2010 Ford Taurus does a far better job.
We don’t like to give automakers passes on poor handling cars simply because they call them muscle cars, but that’s really what the 300S is after all. The big Chrysler is best in a straight line. It’s great fun if you have plenty of straight roads with little traffic, but around corners or in the city the 300S leaves a lot to be desired. On the open highway, the suspension did a good job of absorbing bumps and the motor was quiet and smooth.

Conclusion

As good as this car might be on the highway and on the drag strip, we just can’t get over the price. At $40,000 we could easily find ourselves in an entry-level Mercedes-BenzBMW, or an Audi. All three are just as good on the highway, but offer more refinement, more features, and a better overall driving experience.
Even though we found ourselves ready to give the 300S back, there is something about it that made us smile. Stomping on the accelerator and hearing those tires light up was enjoyable, not to mention the countless turning heads on the roads. Still, we hate to say it, but Chrysler really messed the 300 up. All the parts where there in 2003, but nothing ever came of it. No major updates, suspension tweaks, or anything of that sort. The 300S was the car that was supposed to be great, but it just wasn’t.
Why we like it: Though it needs a color change, the 300S is a mafia sort of car. Not to mention the engine under the hood can get you away from any trouble.
Why we don’t like: The interior is bland and feels cheap, the handling is sub-par, and the overall driving experience left a little to be desired.
Overall rank and verdict: The 2010 Chrysler 300S is the last of the current 300 lineup and we couldn’t be happier to see it go. It was fun and it was memorable, but it’s time. The 300S lacked the refined, quality, and excitement that makes a good car great.-topspeed.com

Lexus CT 200h F-Sport

Lexus CT 200h F Sport Lexus CT 200h F Sport 1
Lexus has already prepared an F-Sport package for the Lexus CT 200h hybrid hatchback and showed it to the public at the 2010 Australian Motor Show. Enhancements of the F sport CT 200h includes both visual and performance upgrades , mind you these performance upgrades are just about tweaking chassis and suspension and not the power.
On the outside you clearly notice the F sport body kit consisting of front and rear styling, alloy wheels, and badging, along with the choice of Lexus’ unique Flame Blue exterior color. Inside the cabin you get optional unique interior trim, F Sport steering wheel, sports pedals, scuff plates, instrument panel and privacy glass.
Other feature of the car dealing with the ride and handling, is the uprated suspension featuring damping technology as an effective way of increasing torsional rigidity, suppressing vibrations and contributing to ride comfort without the penalty of significant extra weight.
The lateral dampers, deployed front and rear, are key elements in a detailed package of design and engineering measures that also includes strategic strengthening and carefully-gauged welding quality throughout the vehicle.
So there you go, if you want your hybrid a little bit sportier, this is the car for you!-motorward.com

Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG at 2010 AIMS

Mercedes-Benz has announced details of the new Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG which is now on show at the Motor Show in Sydney. It’s the first Mercedes-Benz AMG with the new 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8.

The car features a sleek new body, featuring a long and low profile. It features an aggressive new front bar and traditional AMG vents inserted into the front corners. The rear is equally angry, featuring typical quad exhaust outlets inside the big rear diffuser.

Under the bonnet is where most of the changes are though. This is AMG’s new 5.5 twin-turbo V8 that promises greatly improved fuel economy figures over the existing 6.3-litre V8. Power is up to 400kW and torque is truck-like, offering up to 800Nm. All of this is back by a 10.3L/100km claimed fuel rating. It’s also emits just 245 grams of CO2 per kilometre -  great for a high-power V8 grand tourer.
Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Ola Källenius, recently said about the car, “We are heading into a new era with the CL 63 AMG: for the first time we have combined spray-guided direct petrol injection with biturbocharging and the stop/start system. Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, we have reduced both fuel consumption and emissions significantly – while at the same time increasing output and torque.”
The new Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG will go on sale in Australia in November. Prices start at $423,300. The new shape CL will also be available in CL 65, which uses a twin-turbo V12 outputting 463kW of power and 1000Nm of torque. Prices for the CL 65 will start at $519,250.-caradvice.com.au

2010 Paris Auto Show Prototypes: Peugeot SR1 Concept

This is one tangy concept car. Unveiled for the first time at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, the SR1 is by far one of the best proportioned concept cars we have ever seen. Although the production-feasibility of this car is low, given especially the arrival of the RCZ, the SR1 is nonetheless a beautiful exercise in design.

Photo: Matthieu Lambert/Auto123.com

Other than signaling a future design direction for the PSA group (Peugeot-Citroen), the SR1 serves as a test bed, more or less, for new powertrain ideas. The convertible concept is motivated by a turbocharged 218 hp 1.6L 4-cylinder engine combined with a rear-mounted 95 hp electric motor. As both operate to their maximum potential, they develop 313 hp. As the engines drive different sets of wheels, the SR1 is an AWD vehicle.

As is the case with many hybrids, the SR1 can be a full EV when being powered solely by the electric motor. When the internal combustion engine is in action, the car will consume as little as 4.9L/100 km and emit only 119 g/km of CO2.

Styling-wise, the SR1 touches on classic grand-touring design features such as flowing fenders, a large bonnet and a low center of gravity.

The roof, a hard top, fits the SR1's body like a glove and looks as good placed or retracted. It uses preformed profile technology borrowed from the world of sailing.

The wrap-around cockpit enshrines 2+1 seats making the convertible all but a roadster. With a near-futuristic-hint-of-old presentation, the SR1's cabin is a blend of leathers, woods and other high-tech materials such as nickel and satin-finished chrome. -auto123.com

Suzuki Kizashi Turbo Concept Unveiled At Australian International Motor Show

Suzuki has today unveiled a turbocharged version of its recently-launched Kizashi sedan, dubbed Concept Kizashi Turbo.
Thanks to the addition of a turbocharger, the Kizashi's 2.4 litre petrol engine sees power boosted from 131kW to 179kW, while torque grows from 230Nm to 330Nm.
“Customers have been asking about a turbocharged version of this car since the original Concept Kizashi was unveiled at Frankfurt more than three years ago,” Suzuki Australia General Manager Tony Devers said.
“The race-bred Kizashi chassis was always designed to handle more power and we are excited about the potential for a high performance version."
“We worked closely with our good friends from Road Race Motorsports in the US to produce a concept car with the potential to attack the medium car performance market."

Road Race built a similar concept for Suzuki in the US earlier this year, with a larger turbo contributing to a (less-production-friendly) output of 215kW.
Based on the range-topping Kizashi Sport AWD, the Concept Kizashi Turbo gains a lower ride height, upgraded brakes and a front strut brace for increased rigidity. Enkei 19-inch RPF1 wheels prop up each corner, wrapped in 40-series Pirelli rubber.
Devers said Suzuki would use the 2010 Australian International Motor Show to gauge customer reaction to a high performance Kizashi.

“We will closely monitor customer feedback on the concept car and welcome input at facebook.com/suzukiaustralia”-themotorreport.com.au

Unfortunately, performance figures for the Concept Kizashi Turbo have not been revealed.

Video: 2014 Lotus Elite loses its roof

Lotus Elite with roof down
Lotus made quite a splash at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The automaker grabbed the spotlight by showing off five new concept vehicles. One of the proposed cars is the Lotus Elite, a 2+2 grand tourer powered by a 611-horsepower, supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine borrowed from the Lexus IS-F. One surprising detail for this Lotus is its weight. The Elite tips the scales at 3,600 pounds, which is a mammoth sum for anything carrying the company badge. The reason for much of that extra weight may lie in the roof, as the Elite is fitted with a retractable folding hard-top.

Losing the roof creates a whole new perspective for both the driver and people gawking at the car as it passes by. The dramatic lines get a visual boost with the top stowed, since the eye has fewer places to wander. The result is an attractive grand touring car that aims to rival similar offerings from the likes of Ferrari,Maserati and Aston Martin, even if it is a heavyweight by Colin Chapman's standards.

You can let some virtual wind blow through your hair by watching a new Lotus Elite video clip posted after the jump.-autoblog.com

Spyshots: Wiesmann GT MF5 V8 BiTurbo

Wiesmann GT MF5 V8 BiTurbo spyshots
If you’re in the market for a new car and you wish to combine classic lines with modern engineering in a package that screams “performance”, you’ll have to include Wiesmann on your list.
The German automotive producer offers a must-have combination of tubular chassis, a lightweight fiberglass bodywork and BMW power. The wildest beast released by the company is the GT MF5 model. This doesn’t use any kind of BMW power, but comes with the automaker’s beefiest engine, the one used by the M5.

However, BMW has ended the production of the current generation M5 and is preparing to introduce a successor to the model, as the other versions of the new 5 Series have already been introduced. The future M5 will ditch the current 5.0 liter naturally aspirated V10 engine in favor of a bi-turbo 4.4 liter V8 powerplant - the engine is currently being used by the BMW X5 M /X6 M.

This means that the GT MF5 will also follow this pathway. Wiesmann is currently testing the vehicle and we couldn’t let them get away with this, so we sent our  spy photographers to shoot the GT MF5 V8 BiTurbo. The vehicle was immortalized during a recent test session performed on the Nurburgring.

We must mention that the 4.4 liter V8’s output is expected to be increased up to 585 hp for the sports car. The vehicle will also be lighter than the current incarnation, as Wiesmann has made extensive use of lightweight materials.-autoevolution.com
