There have been rumblings and spy shots floating around the Internet for some time, but today Hyundai makes its upcoming compact sport coupe official with the launching of a teaser campaign for the 2011 Hyundai Veloster.
The teaser site doesn't show much more than a countdown to the vehicle's unveiling at the 2011 Detroit auto show on January 10. However, a teaser video found on the automaker's YouTube channel (embedded below) lets us know that the coupe will feature a direct-injected engine--likely a four-cylinder--mated to a dual-clutch automatic gearbox that delivers an estimated 40 mpg. Those numbers lead us to believe the Veloster's engine room will probably resemble that of the newly unveiled Hyundai Elantra. If we're right, then the similarities between the Veloster and the Elantra mean the coupe will likely differentiate itself from Hyundai's other sport coupe, theGenesis Coupe 2.0T, with its front-wheel drive power-train configuration and lower power output, making the Veloster the closest thing we'll get to a replacement for the long-defunct Tiburon. There's also mention of what Hyundai is calling Blue Link, which we're guessing is an evolution of Hyundai's already darn good Bluetooth connectivity package.
Just how close to production-ready the Veloster concept will be when it is unveiled in Detroit is still unclear, but at the rate Hyundai's moving, I wouldn't be surprised to see this model on American streets within the year.-reviews.cnet.com
