Guangzhou Automobile, the Chinese partner of Honda, Toyota and Fiat, has introduced the Trumpchi, a midrange sedan that is the first car to be sold in China under the company's own GAC brand.
Based on the old Alfa Romeo 166 sedan, the Trumpchi is slated to go on sale in March, priced between $18,500 and $28,500, which will position it near the top of Chinese domestic brands. In that price category, it also will compete against the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry, both of which are assembled in China by GAC joint ventures with the respective Japanese partners.
Initially, the Trumpchi will be fitted with a Fiat/Alfa 2.0 Twinspark four-cylinder engine, rated at 148 horsepower and 135 pound-feet of torque, and equipped with either a five-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Eventually, the car also will be offered with a smaller 1.8-liter engine.
GAC, which also is in the process of setting up another joint venture with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors, has an ambitious expansion program designed to lift its annual production capacity in China to 3 million vehicles by 2015, while nearly tripling its revenue during the same period to $60 billion.-insideline.com
