Saab will unveil its first-ever electric vehicle, the 9-3 ePower, at the 2010 Paris Auto Show. The 9-3 ePower, which is based on the 9-3 SportCombi wagon, will begin fleet testing next year in Sweden.
Saab said it wants to evaluate real-world performance of the cars "as part of the development process for a purpose-built, electric Saab vehicle."
Projected driving range between charges is 125 miles from the vehicle's 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
The 9-3 ePower has been developed in collaboration with Boston Power (batteries), Sweden's Electroengine (electric powertrains), Innovatum (project management) and Power Circle, Sweden's electric power industry trade organization.
The 9-3 ePower uses a 181-horsepower electric motor driving the front wheels through a single-speed transmission. Zero-to-60 acceleration takes less than 8.5 seconds. Top speed is 93 mph.
The prototype features electrohydraulic power steering and air-conditioning.
Saab CEO Jan Ake Jonsson said: "By 2015, annual global sales of electric vehicles are expected to reach 500,000 units, and Saab is determined to be represented in this important, growing segment. The 9-3 ePower program is our first step towards developing a potential production vehicle that will deliver the sort of advanced performance our customers expect."-insideline.
