Scion today made its world premiere of the Scion FR-S Concept at the 2011 New York Auto Show. A re-rendering of the Toyota FT-86 concept that made its debut at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, the FR-S in the name stands for “Front Engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport”.
“FR-S stands for Front-engine… Rear-wheel drive… Sport. Pretty simple. I personally believe it should stand for Friggin’ Really Sweet… but the legal department at Toyota was NOT feeling the same way,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president, during the New York Show presentation
The production version of the Scion FR-S Concept is expected to make its debut in 2012, and will come equipped with a 2.0-liter boxer engine that is imported from Subaru. It will feature Toyota’s new D4-S injection system that uses both port and direct injection, thereby increasing horsepower and torque, while still maintaining an impressive mileage. The engine will come mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a paddle-activated automatic transmission.
When compared to the Toyota FT-86, the Scion FR-S Concept appears to have a slightly modified front-view with new stylish headlamps. It also features a modified bumper design, heavily sculpted front and rear fenders, new side sills and mirrors, along with larger alloy wheels. On the rear end, it shows off a new rear-fascia with a protruding boot design. Scion also claims that the low center of gravity of the Scion FR-S concept provides an “ideal” weight distribution
All being said, the Scion FR-S Concept seems like a note-worthy improvement over the Toyota FT-86, and considering that it will make it to production sometime next year, we’re all smiles on this one.-nitrobahn.com
