This year will see Alfa Romeo unveiling a new sports car at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March. And this one goes much easier on your bank balance as well.
Badged as the 4C GTA Concept, the new car will be a mid-engined concept will borrow quite a few points from Alfa’s flagship sports car: the 8C Competizione, and the KTM X-Bow hypercar. The car will most probably be built on the same platform as the KTM X-Bow and house a 1.8 L four-cylinder TBi 1750 petrol engine pushing 265 hp and feature a rear-wheel drive. It is also expected to tip the scales much lower with a generous use of carbon fiber in the build with aluminum front and rear subframes.
Automotive News Europe reported that the automaker plans to limit the production within 20,000 to 25,000 units over the span of the following five years. The company intends to start production of the 4C GTA by the end of 2012 in sister company Fiat’s factory in Europe.
The estimated price tag of around 40,000 euros might remind the folks of the good old days of the much-loved Alfa Spider which was discontinued in 1994. The more recent 8C Competizione in 2007-2008 was enticing, but let us face it: it was way out of the league for most of us. The 200,000-euros plus price tag on the limited 1000 units produced was a surely a heavy one.
One could tickle their memory cells to remember the report about Fiat working on a new AbarthCoupe based on the KTM X-Bow. The 4C GTA might very well be just a slight change in the moniker.-nitrobahn.com
