- BMW’s new concept car should make fans of its early coupes happy, or at least happier than they are with the current 6 Series.
BMW says its Concept 6 Series Coupe will make its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which takes place Nov. 19 through 28. The concept car is a styling preview of the upcoming third generation of the car maker’s 6 Series coupe.
The company says the new design brings “a new definition” to the luxury two-plus-two category of sleek, powerful and exclusively outfitted two-door cars that includes the Mercedes-Benz CL and Bentley Continental. But for people who never really liked the current 6 Series, the best thing about the concept is that it recalls earlier, more beloved BMW coupes like the 635 CSi of the 1980s and 3.0 CSi of the 1970s.
The outgoing model, which has been on the road since 2004, was polarizing from the beginning. From its furrowed-brow front end to its bustle rear, it is a pure “Bangle” car. Its shape reflects the style of BMW’s former design boss, Chris Bangle, and for his many detractors the new concept is a relief.
BMW says the new design has many of the features that made earlier coupes stand out, including a long hood, short overhang beyond the front wheels, a flowing roof line and a passenger compartment set rearward. Among many modern design elements are new LED headlights that maintain BMW’s signature double round-lamp styling. Inside, the new “6″ even tries to make the company’s iDrive control system palatable with a freestanding 10.2-inch iDrive control display in the center of the instrument panel.-blogs.wsj.com
