The popularity of hybrid vehicles is slowly catching up in Malaysia, especially with the introduction of cars such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid on our shores, both from Japanese car-making giants that are the frontrunners of auto-sales here in our country. Before we go further on this topic, let us first understand what hybrid vehicles are. In reality, hybrid vehicles are vehicles that utilize more than a single source of power to fuel and move the vehicle.
There are many advantages of having hybrid vehicles around, for instance they do not depend solely on one energy source, and they are also generally more-environmentally friendly. The hybrids that we have today are basically HEVs, or in other words hybrid electric vehicles that combine the internal combustion engine as well as the use of electrical motors to enable movement of the vehicle.
Malaysia’s first national carmaker, Proton Holding Berhad is all set to jump onto the bandwagon of hybrid vehicle manufacturers as well with the introduction of the Prton Exora hybrid vehicle! Expected to be launched in the local market sometime in December 2010 or latest by the first quarter of 2011, this would mark the beginning of a new era for Proton as they journey into the world of the unknown and untested; hybrid vehicles! The announcement to launch these hybrid Exora vehicles was made by Proton’s head Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Tahir at the Thailand International Motor Expo recently.
Proton Exora hybrid would be designed and constructed with the assistance of technology partner Lotus in addition to several other component manufacturers that would make the hybrid vehicle a reality. Currently, the Exora hybrids are being put through rigorous testing procedures in the United Kingdom before they would find their way to Malaysia. Here these vehicles would first be tested as government official vehicles in the city of Putrajaya as the last stage of testing before mass production is activated in 2011.
The popularity of hybrid vehicles are all-set to peak within the next decade or so, thus Proton is definitely moving in the right direction with its plan to unveil the Exora Hybrid vehicle. If our national carmaker is intending to compete with other automakers in the race to be the top carmaker in the world in the near future, more innovative ideas such as these should be launched to improve the competitiveness of Proton and the Malaysian automobile industry on the whole. Electric vehicles are expected to emerge after hybrids, thus Proton, please take note!
