This is the first official picture of the Euro-spec 2012 Honda Civic five-door hatch, due to debut at the Frankfurt motor show in a couple of weeks.
It doesn't show much of the overall shape of the car but highlights one of the new Civic's signature styling features - a one-piece rear combination light that's also a spoiler.
Hondas says nearly all the Civic's body panels, plastic trim and running gear have been revised, focusing on ride and handling, reduced CO2 emissions through improved aerodynamics and perceived interior quality, while retaining the previous model's space and practicality.
The previous Civic hatch replaced its predecessor's independent rear suspension with a cheaper, less intrusive torsion-beam set-up that was widely seen as a step backwards, while there have also been widespread complaints about cheap, plasticky interior trim on recent Honda models.
Honda has made clear that it has addressed both these issues with the new Civic and is hoping it will herald a return the company's status as the class act of the C segment.
We'll reserve judgement until we get the chance to drive one - which will probably be at the South African launch in January 2012.-iol.co.za
