Premiered at the Geneva Auto show, the new Lancia Ypsilon is being hailed by Lancia as being the company’s "small flagship" that within its 12ft 7in long wheelbase packs the "best of Italian style, innovation and eco-friendliness".
The 5-door Ypsilon was designed by Lancia as a new approach to the European "premium" car concept and is intended to redefine the meaning of the word "luxury", while attracting buyers who seek originality and character, love technology and elegance, and admire quality and innovation. That's a pretty big load for such a small car.
The Ypsilon is a "5-door" with the look typical of an "Italian 3-door" and is a very compact car. Small doesn’t mean basic. The Yipsilon was built with a high standard of roominess and comfort and even though the Ypsilon is just 12ft 7in long, 5ft 5in wide and 4ft 11in high, with a wheelbase of 7ft 10in, the Ypsilon can accommodate up to five people. The Ypsilon has one of the most spacious boots in the European compact car market and is one of the best in class in terms of passenger room. Without increasing the size of the rear passenger area, excellent accessibility and comfort have been achieved with the use of "slim seats", a technology used here for the first time by Fiat Group Automobiles.
At the time of the launch, there will be over 600 possible accessory combinations made possible by cross-matching the 3 interior trim specifications (Silver, Gold and Platinum). Also available are 4 exterior colors which can be ordered in two-tone, with 6 different upholstery trims and 3 types of alloy wheels.
For power, Ypsilon buyers have a choice of 3 engines including a 69 HP 1.2 Fire EVO II and 85 HP 0.9 TwinAir, along a turbodiesel 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet II. All are equipped with Start&Stop technology as standard. Later in the production run a 1.2 Fire EVO II Bi-fuel engine (petrol and LPG) will be available.
Different trim levels will offer a variety of features such as with the Silver trim level that provides door opening remote control, height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, electric front windows, 50/50 split rear seat, height-adjustable driver seat, 15" steel wheels, interiors in technical fabric with fitted electro-welded seams, radio set-up and rear heated window. The Gold version adds manual climate control, radio with CD and MP3 player, electrically adjustable door mirrors, steering wheel and leather-trimmed gear-lever gaiter, Castiglio upholstery and Comfort Pack. Finally, the Platinum trim level offers the added rear electric windows, fog lights; 15" alloy wheels, rear seat head restraints and leather upholstery.
For those eager to make their Ypsilon truly exclusive, an extensive range of accessories are available from exclusive 16" alloy wheels, side skirts and tinted headlights to a black kick plate with illuminated logo, a "Blue&Me-TomTom LIVE" and the Accessories Packs
In terms of safety, ABS with EBD, ESP complete with ASR and Hill Holder, front and side airbags, and also the Isofix attachments are offered standard.
The new Ypsilon will be on the market from June across key European markets and beginning in September in Great Britain and Ireland under the Chrysler banner. No word on price.-sportscarillustrated.com
